Learning at Woodlands
At Te Akatārere Woodlands School, we believe every tamaiti can experience success. Our teaching is structured, explicit and responsive, with strong foundations in literacy and mathematics. We regularly monitor progress and provide additional targeted or individualised support when needed. By working closely with tamariki, whānau and specialist services, we aim to remove barriers, nurture strengths and help every learner thrive.

Our Approach to Teaching
Our teachers create safe, positive and engaging learning environments where tamariki are supported to become confident, connected and capable learners.

Teaching at Woodlands includes:

• Responsive grouping and classroom support
• Practical, collaborative and hands-on learning
• Learning that reflects the culture, language and identity of our tamariki

Literacy
Strong literacy skills open doors to learning across the curriculum. We use structured and explicit approaches to teach reading, writing, spelling, oral language and vocabulary.

In our junior school, tamariki learn through the Better Start Literacy Approach. Our middle and senior learners continue to develop their literacy knowledge and skills through our Te Akatārere literacy programme.

Teachers regularly monitor progress and adjust teaching to meet learners’ needs. Tamariki who require additional support may receive targeted small-group or individual literacy instruction.

Mathematics
Our mathematics programme develops knowledge, confidence, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Teachers use our schoolwide scope and sequence alongside Oxford Maths resources to provide consistent and carefully sequenced learning across the school.

Mathematics teaching includes:

• Explicit teaching of important concepts and strategies
• Regular review and practice
• Mathematical discussion and reasoning
• Practical materials and visual representations
• Problem-solving and real-life applications
• Targeted small-group support when needed

Learning Through Our Local Environment
Our beautiful semi-rural environment is an extension of our classrooms. Surrounded by native trees, birdsong and open spaces, our tamariki have opportunities to explore, create, investigate and learn through experience.

Learning is connected to te taiao, sustainability, local places, histories and the wider Ōpōtiki community. Outdoor education, sport, practical activities and inquiry learning help tamariki understand how their learning connects with the world around them.

Culture, Language and Identity
We want every tamaiti to feel known, valued and proud of who they are. Te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, kapa haka and mātauranga Māori are important parts of learning at Te Akatārere Woodlands School.

We value the knowledge, experiences, cultures and languages that tamariki and whānau bring to our kura. Strong relationships and a sense of belonging provide the foundation for engagement, wellbeing and successful learning.

Supporting Every Learner
Every tamaiti receives high-quality classroom teaching. When a learner needs additional support, we use a Response to Intervention framework to provide the right level of assistance.

Support may include classroom adjustments, targeted small-group intervention, individualised teaching, teacher aide support or involvement from specialist services. We monitor progress carefully and work alongside tamariki and whānau when making decisions about support.

Monitoring and Reporting Progress
Teachers use classroom observations, learning conversations, work samples and formal assessments to understand what tamariki know and what they are ready to learn next.

Progress is monitored throughout the year and used to:

• Plan responsive teaching
• Set learning goals
• Identify strengths and next learning steps
• Recognise when additional support may be needed
• Share progress with tamariki and whānau
• Whānau conferences, learning conversations and written reports provide opportunities to celebrate progress, discuss next steps and develop shared goals.

Positive Learning Environments
Successful learning is supported by strong relationships, clear expectations and a sense of belonging. As a Positive Behaviour for Learning school, we explicitly teach the behaviours and values that help everyone learn and thrive.
