Helping with Learning at Home

Whānau play an important role in supporting learning at home. Simple everyday activities such as reading together, practising basic number facts, talking about new ideas, cooking, playing games and exploring the outdoors can make a real difference. Encourage your child to share what they are learning, celebrate their effort and progress, and help them develop positive routines for reading and completing homework.

Maths Learning

Whānau often tell us that maths is taught differently from when they were at school. While some methods and language may have changed, the goal remains the same: helping tamariki develop strong number knowledge, effective strategies and a deep understanding of how mathematics works. Literacy Learning

Reading, writing, speaking and listening are closely connected, and whānau can strengthen these skills through simple everyday activities. Read with your child regularly, talk about stories and new words, encourage them to notice sounds and letters in words, and provide opportunities to write for real purposes—such as lists, messages or captions. Our junior classes use the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA), which provides structured teaching in phonological awareness, letter–sound knowledge, word reading, spelling and oral language.
